Quilting Classes

Creative Sewing Center                        San Antonio, Texas 78216                                210-344-0791

Quilting classes are open to all sewing machine owners. These classes require a sewing machine in good working order. Students should be prepared to purchase fabric before the day of class or before the class time in most cases. There are a few classes that require cutting before the class. If you are not comfortable with cutting strips and blocks please come to the Rotary Cutting Basics class. You may like to cut your strips under teacher guidance.

T-Shirt & Sweatshirt Quilts with Mara
Monday October 3 10:00-4:00 $35.00 ENROLL

Please, help me do something with these t-shirts is what we hear all the time! When you get a few of these quilts under your belt, you might even go into business. There are so many people with specialty t-shirts. You will start to hear “What you did with my t-shirts was fabulous!”

T shirts:
a. You will need any number of shirts that will create a square or rectangular quilt such as twelve
b. To estimate how large your quilt will be plan on each block from an adult T shirt to be 12"x12", You can "stretch" the size of your quilt with wider sashing and borders.
2. Interfacing:
You will need a lightweight fusible interfacing (one brand name is French Fuse) that is sufficiently large to cover the back of each block PLUS 2 inches. The interfacing does not have to be in a single piece; you can piece it by butting up the edges.
3. Sashing:
Since assorted T shirts do not have any particular color theme your quilt will have a "scrappy" look. Your sashing and border will determine your color scheme.
Batting and Backing:
The amount of batting and batting you will need is determined by the number of blocks and the width of your sashing and borders.

Mara's Panel Magic Quilt
Thursdays 1-4
Oct 13, 20, 27, Nov 10 $60.00 ENROLL
Who Should Take this Class?

This quilt can be made by a quilter of any skill level, from beginner to advanced. It was designed, however, for someone who has made smaller projects such as panels, and would like to take on a bigger project such as a bed-size quilt.

This quilt begins with a small, central panel and then "grows" to any size you desire with simple borders. It is assembled in manageable sections, and quilted after each border is added so there is no need to maneuver a large quilt under your sewing machine.

I made the quilt that is pictured using a Stonehenge panel. This panel is available in several colors. Choose this or any panel that you like for your quilt.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED FOR THE FIRST CLASS:

1. You will need to know the size of quilt that you want to make.

2. You will need to bring a panel of your choosing. It should be in colors that you like as it will be your "focus fabric" from which most colors for the borders will be selected. Many of the panels at Creative Sewing Center have companion fabrics. It is not necessary to choose a panel with companion fabrics, but it will make the design process easier.

3. In the first class you will select a design and fabric for the first border. You will cut and sew the first border. For this you will need:
a. a rotary cutter and a cutting mat
b. a ruler
c. sewing machine and neutral thread
d some way of sewing a ¼ inch seam. If you don't have a ¼ in foot bring a roll of masking tape, and pencil and paper
